A few weeks ago, we challenged you to send us stories about your favorite tie, to enter you to win a tie from SKINNYFATTIES’ “The Pop Collection.” After carefully reading through all of your stories, we have finally chosen our top winner. Here is Adam’s winning story:
"One of my favorite guys in the entire world, my late grandfather taught me how to tie my own ties. I remember every time I had an important occasion as a kid, he would tie them on himself and slip them over his head and hand them off to me with the classic windsor knot. Over time I learned from him how to tie on my own. After he passed I kept many of his ties and love to wear them and think fondly of the memories that the two of us shared." - Adam G., New York.
We will be sending confirmation emails out to the rest of our winners this week. Stay tuned - you may be one of them.
What drew you into the Mount Gay and SKINNYFATTIES partnership?
I loved that Mount Gay appreciated the stylist as a craftsman because I really think that what I do is an art. Also, as I’ve grown up I’ve really gotten into the art of making a cocktail so it was a perfect pairing of mixology and fashion!
Do you find that the process you take in styling is similar to the meticulous, handcrafted process that Mount Gay uses to create it’s rum and that Joshua uses to create SKINNYFATTIES?
Absolutely. Mount Gay, Joshua, and I all put a lot of care and attention into what we do. We also all clearly love the process that is involved with what we do. While the end product is always important, the process to get to the final product is equally, or even more important. We all love the process!
How did you determine the overall looks from our 3 cocktails?
Scott Fitzgerald (Mount Gay Brand Ambassador and Mixologist), Joshua and I all sat down and had a creative meeting. Scott explained the inspiration and ingredients that go into each cocktail and then Joshua and I took inspiration from Scott’s descriptions and the feelings we got when we drank the cocktails. So for example, for The Black Key, Scott explained that the drink was the most “rock and roll” so I really wanted to portray that in the styling. That’s why I paired a leather jacket with a black jean and a black leather boot!

What made Mount Gay a fitting partner to work with?
Just like SKINNYFATTIES, Mount Gay Rum understands quality over quantity.
What is most appealing to you about Mount Gay Black Barrel?
The Black Barrel packaging is true to the story behind the brand. The beautiful glass bottle with the wooden top is a testament to the artisanship of the rum-making. The rum itself is rich and sophisticated in taste and pairs so well with so many flavors.
How did Mount Gay Black Barrel inspire the three looks that you and Sam worked on?
When creating the looks for the Mount Gay Rum cocktails, we focused on colors and flavor notes. We channeled our inspiration and designed our own ties through The Pop Collection. Sam did a little stylist magic and gave all of our models backstories on why they would be wearing these clothes. We basically just let our imaginations run wild – isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Mount Gay Rum is proud to partner with fashion influence Joshua Brueckner of SKINNYFATTIES and celebrity stylist Sam Spector to showcase sophisticated men’s looks inspired by Mount Gay Black Barrel cocktails.
Just as Master Blender Allen Smith carefully selects and blends each barrel of Mount Gay Rum, Mount Gay Black Barrel salutes those who strive for handcrafted and high quality products. Allen Smith, Joshua Brueckner, and Sam Spector are all masters of their skills – crafting delicious rums, hand-tailoring bespoke ties, and curating sophisticated looks, forming the perfect trio.
Like Mount Gay, the story of SKINNYFATTIES also begins with a time and a place – 2012 in New York City, when Joshua needed more fashionable ties for job interviews. Realizing he was able to tailor his own ties, he created SKINNYFATTIES which evolved from a personal endeavor to a professional business. Customers can have their old, fat ties recycled into skinny ones, or customize and design their own ties to fit to their individual need.
The Mount Gay and SKINNYFATTIES stories are complementary, as transforming old, wide ties into more modern, skinny ones parallels the journey rum has taken to become a more sophisticated, refined spirit enjoyed neat or in classic cocktails.
